US Treasury Discontinues Penny Production

For Consumers

Due to the U.S. Treasury’s decision to discontinue production of the penny, banks nationwide — including UniBank — are beginning to experience limited penny availability. As a result, limits on coin orders may apply. We encourage you to begin preparing for this transition.

Ways for Consumers to Adapt:

  • Deposit saved coins to your UniBank account for use

  • Be prepared for some stores or service providers to begin rounding cash transactions to the nearest nickel

  • Continue to use your pennies for as long as they remain legal tender

For Businesses

UniBank’s branch teams are actively managing our coin supply to minimize disruption and will continue to fulfill business coin orders to the best of our ability. However, due to the declining national supply, we may need to impose limits on the number of pennies included in coin orders. We encourage you to consider alternative ways to manage cash transactions and pricing.

Ways for Businesses to Adapt:

  • Consider rounding cash transactions to the nearest 5 cents for cash payments

  • Promote debit, credit, or mobile payment options to reduce the reliance on cash and coins

  • Review pricing structures to minimize the need for pennies (for example, setting prices to end in .00, .05, or .10).

  • Inform employees and customers about the change to ensure smooth and transparent transactions at the point of sale.

We understand that operational adjustments take time, and UniBank is here to support you through this change. We are available to help answer any questions you may have. You can speak with a member of the team at any of our branch locations or contact our Customer Contact Center at 800.578.4270 with any concerns.

Thank you for your flexibility and partnership as we adapt together.
