UniBank Supports Alternatives' Mill Renovation Project

UniBank is pleased to announce that $100,000 will be donated to the mill restoration project being planned at Alternatives Unlimited, Inc. The $8 million project has a capital campaign to raise $3.4 million, and has so far raised $2.4 million through individual gifts and corporate, foundation and state grants. Alternatives plans for the remainder to be financed.  Ground breaking is expected late spring of 2006.

The Alternatives project will create an inclusive community treasure that will meet three broad goals. 1) Redefine Alternatives’ role as a more responsible corporate citizen and community leader contributing to the prosperity of the area; 2) Create a cultural hub, which engages people of all abilities and contributes to a more tolerant and enriched community for everyone; and 3) Help the individuals they serve develop new relationships and the valued community roles so important to their success.

According to Kenneth J. Redding, UniBank president and CEO, “It is obvious to our board that Alternatives continues to be served by an extraordinary group of dedicated volunteers, and a caring and competent management group.  We are proud to be a part of this visionary community project.”

Alternatives provides residential and employment services to adults with disabilities throughout Central Massachusetts through a variety of programs, placing a strong emphasis on social integration.  “UniBank has been a supporter of Alternatives for many years,” states Dennis H. Rice, executive director of Alternatives, “We share much the same positive vision for the future of Whitinsville and the Blackstone Valley. I would like to thank UniBank’s management and board for this extraordinary leadership gift.”

This project will further integrate people with disabilities and the general public by creating an environment that will draw the entire community to the Alternatives Whitin Mill complex.  The renovated Mill complex will feature an outdoor plaza providing space for a farmer’s market and outdoor dining, with a scenic patio overlooking the Mumford River.  The restoration of the mill will preserve a cherished part of American history.  The project will also include restoration of the water turbine, which will provide hydropower for the facility. The turbine, along with Photovoltaic panels and geothermal wells, is expected to save the complex $100,000 per year.  In addition, there will be onsite apartments for individuals served by Alternatives and a multi-use training/ performance/ conference center to provide a first-rate community event venue.
